Great Barrier - Repetition - Vinyl Great Barrier is a project undertaken by Constantine “Dino” Karlis (HDU, Dimmer, Alastair Galbraith, Sonic Boom/Spectrum, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Foundling) and two neuroscientist-musicians he was artistically drawn to: Jason Kerr (My Deviant Daughter, Southkill) and Richard Hahnloser. The latter’s piano and synthesizer playing adds a minimalist-jazz-inspired harmonic flow to the band’s idiosyncratic sound which amalgamates drone, improv, noise, dub, and field recordings. In creating the body of work titled Repetition, the lineup of Kerr (Dunedin expat, lives in Bonn, Germany) on guitar and bass, Karlis (Dunedin expat, lives in Berlin, Germany) on drums, and Hahnloser (from Zurich, Switzerland) is augmented by late NZ musician and composer Dean Roberts (Thela, White Winged Moth, Thurston Moore) who contributed guitar on one song. Roberts died unexpectedly last year, aged 49.

The influences are many and evolving, you can most likely hear them. That’s what happens the more you do this kind of thing, the surprises are few and far between, but when they arrive, they are welcome. Karlis, Kerr, and Roberts brought the drone and noise from their collective experience, but they turned it way down, adding depth and a churning groove.

Hahnloser’s melodic and textural improvs provide the focus. The result lies in an interstitial space: between the complex simplicity of The Necks; Porter Ricks’ woozy throb; Can fronted by a disoriented Keith Jarrett; Joy Division in a tropical rainforest; the isolationism of FSOL’s ISDN; Earth’s endless chordscapes.

The band navigates the margins with subtlety, crafting pieces that are equal parts unsettling and soothing. Their combined histories seep through, but it’s the understated shifts and textures here that genuinely captivate. It’s a slow-burning dialogue that offers rewards.

Featuring twelve songs, Penguins Ate My Chips continues the musical trajectory of MarineVille’s previous release, the 7” Face/Eat Toast – “no-wave keyboards, coarse and/or slashing guitar and those non-mawkish emo vocals that NZ is famous for…” (Byron Coley, The Wire).

Band members are seasoned figures in the NZ underground; Denise Roughan (bass, ex 3Ds), Greg Cairns (drums, ex Constant Pain), Jeremy Coubrough (keys, Tlaotlon), Mark Williams (vox/gtr, Bad Statistics, Cookie Brooklyn and the Crumbs, Baa Baa and the Black Sheep).

Sessions for Penguins Ate My Chips began in 2012, in the band’s Wellington warehouse, nestled in-between a local gang headquarters, an animal sanctuary and a meth-amphetamine crazed neighbour who threatened to beat up the band and was later arrested for driving around their local suburb on a child’s motorcycle whilst waving a sawn-off shotgun. In 2013 six further songs were recorded with Warner Emery, and later mixed and mastered in Dunedin by Forbes Williams (no relation).

Of the four members, Mark Williams is the sole surviving member from the bands original line up in 1999. Penguins marks a departure from the first MarineVille record in 2001 which was built around more open ended free form rock. Says Williams, “With the band members having busy lives, I decided to make this record a series of short, upbeat songs that we could hammer out live and not worry too much about the finesse. Several of the tracks didn’t have lyrics when we recorded them but I trusted us to knock out the tune and construct the rest of the song in the studio at home.”

Penguins Ate My Chips was initially released in 2015 on guitarist Mark Williams’ new tape/download imprint Burning Log. “After the collapse of physical release options elsewhere it seemed easier to start my own thing … I’d rather be writing music than writing emails to labels”. Since the release of the tape Zelle boss Arno Loeffler approached the band about a vinyl release. Says Loeffler,”When I first listened to the tape, I thought, wow, this is so good, someone just has to put Penguins out on vinyl! It could certainly be an instant Kiwi classic.”

MarineVille is currently an intermittent live project, with a fluid membership based around Williams and Cairns, plus Kirsten Van Newtown, Tenzin Mullin and Craig Monk. In lieu of extensive touring, the band have recently been working on a series of videos and have been playing gigs in Williams’ home town of Dunedin, where most of the band are now based.

The physical LP contains a download code for Penguins Ate My Chips and for the live album 15 Wax Tears, recorded in 2011 and originally released on cassette by Epic Sweep records in 2012.

The duo retreated to the same wooded sanctuary studio in the wilds of Tapu where they tracked their 2016 debut, Eternal Delight, but this time in a calmer, more contemplative headspace: "internal white noise subsided and we really started to appreciate the peace of our environment." Aided, too, by a vaster cast of collaborators, they fashioned "a very modern/mobile band," combining local recordings with inspired long-distance overdubs. Frequent ally Gary War contributed bass and synth from various American motel rooms while on tour with John Maus; lush live drums came courtesy of lauded Lorde keyboardist Jimmy Mac, ex-Surf City guitarist Joshua Kennedy layered in additional tiers of jangle and fuzz; veteran improvisational experimentalist Jeff Henderson cameos with subtle arcs of saxophone on the divine "Delphiniums In Harmony / Two Worlds Away"; and even legendary six-string expressionist Roy Montgomery makes a guest appearance, weaving tendrils of heavenly electricity within one of the album’s darkest highlights "Ruinous Splendour." The results were then mixed in Mount Eden, Auckland, with engineer Thomas Healy, utilising his sizable collection of vintage tape machines, arriving at a sound both spacious and sensual, swooning and spellbound. Certain songs rank among the most proper enchantress pop yet ventured in the Purple Pilgrims canon, while others shimmer with more veiled kaleidoscopic textures, yet taken as a whole Perfumed Earth presents a persuasive evolutionary step forward. The sisters intertwined voices soar, seduce, and slowdive, radiating rich spectrums of archetypal experience: journeys, longing, homecomings. Theirs is a unique nexus of paradise and isolation, beauty and blankness, ritual and the right now; or as they phrase it: “ancient imagery expressed through a modern lens - folks songs played on synthesized instruments." The band have come into their own continuing to use the formula of weekend garage jamming and crafting these jams into songs to bring the double album, Animal Lovers into life. Although Seafog are still magpies and obviously wear their musical influences on their collected sleeves, they have a unique sound. South Island audiences have been treated to the recorded songs played live recently with the band saying they have played some of their best gigs to date. Another noticeable change has been the gradual separation of the guitars and Martyn Sadler’s backing vocals giving the Port Chalmers three-piece fronted by Robin Sharma another dimension. Once self-proclaimed as folk, punk, country rock, Seafog have formed into a sonic, assault, groove. This double album will have the answers for anyone wanting a fix into listening to something new, unique or invigorating. The band also have plans to release this epic vinyl project onto digital formats. Catch them live.
