THE DARK BACKWARD

matthew bannister

On Matthew Bannister’s new album The Dark Backward, he plays in and out of time, on a musical journey back and forth across decades.

The Dark Backward is out now on CD, and digitally.

Matthew Bannister’s musical backstory includes the much-loved Flying Nun 80s band Sneaky Feelings, through 90s Flying Nun outfit The Dribbling Darts of Love, two well-received Beatles reinterpretations (Evolver and Rubber Solo), various solo releases under the moniker One Man Bannister, and several albums with his regular band, The Changing Same (most recently, The Changing Same Go To The Movies (Powertool, 2023).

On The Dark Backward he offers up a series of original songs, some new and a few old, woven together with the theme of time.

This isn’t a retrospective, he says. “It’s about time…”

The Dark Backward is already picking up great reviews.

"Bannister is an unashamed fan – and creator – of pop music of the kind which came to fruition in the Sixties...so these songs – rock, pop, ballads, folk, lightlydelic pop – are focused, have sharp melodies and choruses, and mostly get in and out in under three minutes.

That's a craft in itself and something as clever and catchy as History Train...suggests a deep admiration for Ray Davies, Andy (XTC) Partridge and other reflective, observational writers."
Graham Reid, Elsewhere

"Matthew Bannister's new album "The Dark Backwards" is a really great listen...The production is great. It's an album in the true sense of the word in that there is a coherency to the 15 chosen songs, dealing contemplatively with the passing of time, how we suddenly find ourselves at the other end of the life spectrum.

...it feels like a thinking album, and Matthew's always had something to say...This is the guy that wrote Sneaky Feelings Husband House, Not To Take Sides, Dad and the Family Dog, and Backroom. He's in good voice, and great form." – Rob Mayes, Failsafe Records

The Dark Backward: Song notes

The first single from The Dark Backward, 'Floating In the River of Time', was released on February 11.

Bannister says of the song, “Time is often described as a river. If so, are we swimming against the current or borne along by it?

“If you’ve ever swum across a river, you’ll know the feeling of being carried away. There’s no point fighting it, you have to go with the flow, resign yourself to beaching several hundred metres downstream…”

Matthew Bannister has provided some fascinating insights into other songs on The Dark Backward.

- 'History Train'
“History Train” is partly about being a teenage Scottish trainspotter, which had nothing to do with heroin - I hung around stockyards and engine depots, writing down numbers. I was into model trains, too, but swapped mine for a guitar."

- 'In the Beginning' looks at the end of innocence.

- 'Secret of the Century' is time, the unexpected.

- 'What’s So Good About the 60s?' is a satiric romp across the decade when people still believed in the future.

- 'Midnight Explosions' is about New Year 2020

- 'Space and Time'
“Typically time is seen in terms of clocks, but clocks only measure time. The measurement should not be mistaken for what is measured."

- 'Hearts Don’t Keep': time is not yet up…

- 'Bad Time', recorded in 2000, is fairly self-explanatory.

- 'The Best Is Yet To Come' – must be an old song, with an optimistic title like that.

- 'No Sooner Here' is a vintage Dribbling Darts of Love number, from the EP, Florid Dabblers Voting (Flying Nun, 1991).

Matthew Bannister 'Midnight Explosions'

This song is about New Year 2020.
“The horizon was red every night with Australian bushfires, and neighbours kept letting off fireworks. My dreams were filled with flames and random detonations.”
